Five Infrequently Asked Questions About Tree Care

TACOMA–A little anecdotal information is always fun, so here are our top five Infrequently Asked Questions about tree care, just in case you wanted you know.

1. What is the origin of the word “arborist”? We are so glad you asked! The first known use of the word arborist was in 1755, but the word arbor has its roots (see what we did there?) in New Latin, meaning tree. The term for tree was adapted to refer to a person who specializes in the care and treatment of trees. So now you know!

2. What machine do we use to remove stumps? Family Tree Care uses a rototiller type of machine that slowly grinds away at the stump. This creates chips and sawdust that are much more easily removed than hacking a big stump out of the ground, and enormously reduced the amount of time required to remove a stump.

3. “Bonded, licensed, and insured.” I see that a lot, but what does it mean, and does it matter when I’m hiring someone to do tree work? In greatly simplified terms, these mean that the people doing the work have received the required licensing through the state to do the specified work, that they have insurance so you aren’t liable for medical coverage of injuries that occur while they are doing the job, and that any claims against the company, if valid, could possibly be covered with a required surety bond if the company is unable to pay. In short, you won’t have any unpleasant surprises from our company because we’ve got all those bases covered for you. Don’t even consider hiring someone to do your tree work without the words “bonded, licensed, and insured” listed under their qualifications. You are just asking for trouble.

4. Do you plant trees? Isn’t there something about Arbor Day?While Arbor Day is celebrated in April in most states, and the central fixture to that day is planting trees, we celebrate trees all year long. While we can certainly advise you on tree choice, proximity of placement to your house, and beautify your existing trees, planting trees is not central to our business. However, we can help you with any trees you currently have and remove any problematic ones.

5. How can you give me a valid estimate over the phone? We have arborist super powers. Just kidding. Actually, our free estimate form we give you the option of uploading a photo of your tree/hedge/stump/issue, and a space to explain the work you want done. Thanks to our extensive experience, your photos etc. translate into a close estimate of the costs and time required to do the work.
